Networks Unlimited, a value-added distributor within the converged technology, data centre, networking and security landscapes, has supported the fund-raising efforts of one of its partners, EOH, at the Randpark Ridge United Church in Johannesburg, by helping to upgrade the church’s vegetable garden.
Some of the Networks Unlimited employees joined forces with their EOH counterparts on Friday 14 July to help build a viable chicken coop in the vegetable garden area using recycled wooden pallets, as well as creating additional vegetable planters from used vehicle tyres.
The produce from the church vegetable garden, which has been in existence for just one year, is used for the Randpark Ridge United Church’s soup kitchen, which helps to give meals to the homeless in the area. The church also uses its vegetable beds to teach members from nearby poorer communities how to grow their own vegetables and become more self-sufficient.
When a secure space is ready for the chickens to live in safely, about 100 day-old chicks will be brought into the area and will, in time, add free-range eggs to the church’s vegetable garden produce offering. The goal is for the garden to be completely self-sustaining in time, and this will include introducing a small farmer’s market on the church grounds to sell the produce to the public at regular intervals.
Network Unlimited’s CSI Manager, Ingrid Mulaudzi, says, “The self-sufficiency and training aspect of this community project fits in perfectly with our drive to assist in uplifting poorer communities and helping them to help themselves in practical ways. At Networks Unlimited we are enormously pleased that our business partner, EOH, invited us to join this worthy initiative for Mandela Day this year, and we look forward to seeing the project growing from strength to strength.”
