The most searched terms on Google in South Africa this week.
Another week has gone by where millions of South Africans have gone online to keep up to date with all the trending topics and news for the final week of August 2017.
This past week saw Games of Thrones (GoT) season 7 come to an end and it was clearly top of mind for South Africans - four of the five top trending questions in South Africa this week relate to GoT. The Money Fight also got a look in - with South Africans wanting to know how much Mayweather won.
Here are the top five trending questions on Google SA this week:
- How much did Mayweather win?
- How many episodes are there in Game of Thrones season 7?
- Who is Jon Snow's father?
- How is Jon Snow related to Daenerys?
- Will there be a season 8 of Game of Thrones?
Other trending search terms this week which just missed out on the top 5 included ‘14 million student’ on Thursday with some 5 000+ searches and ‘NSFAS’ on Wednesday with some 20 000+ searches as a student went on a spending spree after NSFAS inadvertently advanced her R14 million.
‘Babes Wodumo’ trended on Tuesday (10 000+ searches) after it emerged her ‘missing USB’ incident - where she claimed to have lost a USB drive with an unmastered song on it - was nothing but a publicity stunt.
Unsurprisingly, ‘Game of Thrones season 8’ trended on Monday with some 20 000+ searches as devastated fans tried to find out when they can expect their next fix of the hit show. The season finale of Season 7 aired on Sunday night.
Saturday night/Sunday morning saw the ‘Mayweather vs McGregor fight’ trend with 500 000+ searches as fans got up well before the sun to watch the fight live from the US.
This information is gleaned from from data collated by Google based on what South Africans have been searching for and asking Google this week. Google processes more than 40 000 search queries every second. This translates to more than a billion searches per day and 1.2 trillion searches per year worldwide.
