PUBG drops lawsuit against Fortnite creators
The studio behind PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, PUBG, has dropped its lawsuit against the creators of Fortnite, according to a report from Bloomberg.
PUBG withdrew their copyright infringement lawsuit by sending a letter of withdrawal to Epic Games’ attorneys on Monday. PUBG sued Epic Games earlier this year in Korea over concerns that Fortnite Battle Royale infringed on PUBG’s intellectual property.
A statement has not yet been made by PUBG on why exactly they have decided to end legal proceedings or if the two companies have reached a settlement.
PUBG initially went after Epic Games as “a measure to protect their copyrights”, fearing that Fornite would replicate the playstyle that PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds was famous for, but Fornite creators have been very open about where the inspiration for the game’s Battle Royale mode came from.
“Yeah, we made a PvP mode for Fortnite,” Epic said when the mode was announced last September. “We love Battle Royale games like PUBG and thought Fortnite would make a great foundation for our own version.”
Epic Games provides PUBG with its Unreal Engine technology, used to create PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds and an industry standard for professional game developers. Both studios are also partly owned by Chinese firm Tencent.
