Drones to monitor progress of Gauteng service delivery projects

Gauteng Infrastructure Development MEC Jacob Mamabolo

The Gauteng department of infrastructure development has launched a programme using drones to monitor the progress of projects across the province.

The initiative launched on Monday in Etwatwa‚ Ekurhuleni‚ demonstrated the uses of drones with the nerve centre of the department‚ called Lutsinga Infrastructure House.

It combines human intelligence‚ business intelligence and now also artificial intelligence to ensure that the entire value chain of project delivery is efficient and that projects are delivered in time‚ within cost and at the right quality.

The department will also be able to improve its reporting by ensuring that all information is gathered from one source. Most importantly‚ the monitoring of project performance will further enable the department to proactively manage compliance issues largely residing in other spheres of government‚ such as local municipalities.

In a recent interview with 702 Talk Radio, Gauteng Infrastructure Development MEC Jacob Mamabolo said the use of drones will speed up the delivery of projects such as new schools, libraries and clinics to communities in the province.

“Over the next three years, we plans to deliver 340 projects, valued at R4.5 billion, these are productive assets that communities need to live better quality of life. That is why we are now using smart technologies - we have a business intelligence system and we are now backing that up with drones.”

The MEC also added that the sole purpose of using drones is to make sure that projects are delivered in the most efficient and effective way.

“We will be able to get the most appropriate, accurate and consistent data that we can then use in the overall delivery of our projects,” he mentioned.
