According to a report via TelecomPaper, the Ugandan Communications Commission (UCC) has warned the public against an emergent trend in the industry in which fraudsters impersonate subscribers. Once done, the fraudsters then attempt to extort money from the unsuspecting correspondents of the victims.
The report reveals that this is done using automated online systems largely through the SMS messaging platform.
In a statement, according to TelecomPaper, the UCC has cautioned subscribers and advised them to take extra caution and always confirm the originator of any money related messages to avoid falling prey to such acts. The regulator said it’s working relentlessly with other stakeholders in the industry to combat this latest vice.
