Rwanda: Motorists in Kigali can now pay parking fees via mobile platform

Rwanda: Motorists in Kigali can now pay parking fees via mobile platform.

MTN Rwanda has announced a partnership with Kigali Veterans Cooperatives Society (KVCS), a company in charge of collecting parking fees, to introduce a payment option for parking fees via the MTN Mobile Money platform. Motorists in Kigali will now be able to make instant payments of their parking fees using the MTN Mobile Money service.

According to MTN, the partnership with KVCS follows the recent launch of MTN’s annual MoMo Month to support and further Rwanda’s national agenda on promoting a cashless economy. The campaign will be marked by a series of events countrywide expected to raise awareness and educate Rwandans about the benefits of MTN Mobile Money.

MTN Rwanda, Chief Executive Officer, Bart Hofker, said that MTN thinks it is important to create new opportunities through strategic alliances such as the partnership with KVCS, by ensuring the convenience for customers when making payments is met.

“We are proud to continuously champion innovation to meet the growing demand for technologies that drive efficiency and boost convenience to MTN’s rapidly growing customer base. It is for this reason that we have introduced a convenient and cashless way to pay for parking fees or fines using MTN Mobile Money,” Hofker said.

KVCS, Managing Director, Frank Ntabana said the partnership seeks to digitise parking fees collection, enabling motorists to make instant payments using their mobile phones.

“We believe that this platform is convenient for motorists and will help ease access to our services...We are confident that this partnership will give our clients better services,” he said.

To use the service, customers can dial *799#, then select language, enter the car registration number (you will receive a balance due message in parking tickets and fines), type the amount you wish to pay. The customer will receive a message to approve the payment via mobile money and they can pay full or partial fees for a week or month. The customer will need to enter a PIN to confirm the payment. MTN Mobile Money will send payment confirmation.

Digitisation of parking fees payment was first initiated in 2016 with KVCS inking a deal with Tigo Cash Rwanda to pilot the system.
