Uganda: Telecom operators deny airtime price hike allegations.
Ugandan telecommunications operators have denied allegations of hiking airtime prices in the country. Customers were warned not to pay an extra amount when buying airtime. This comes after customers, especially those of MTN, Airtel and Africell, complained after being charged an unusual amount when buying airtime.
MTN senior manager corporate affairs Justina Ntabgoba-Kayemba said: "We have not increased prices of our airtime and if a retailer asks you to pay extra money, please walk away and use other sources where you will not be cheated."
MTN has released a statement labelling the hike as illegal, the company said: "We inform our customers and the public that MTN has not increased its airtime prices. Those who sell airtime at overcharged prices do so illegally."
The telecoms company has encouraged customers to buy airtime electronically. Customers can purchase their airtime through the EasyLoad option or off their mobile money account.
"Customers, who load airtime using MTN Mobile Money or EasyLoad, get an instant 30 percent bonus on the value of the airtime they buy. It's also free to deposit money or buy airtime (for yourself or another customer) using MTN Mobile Money," said MTN.
Airtel Uganda also released a statement saying that: "All customers should note that the price paid for airtime should be that of the face value of airtime."
