On Tuesday 17 October 2017, Airbnb released the findings of their research into the company's dealings in Africa. According to the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) travel and tourism accounts for 10 percent of global GDP (Gross Domestic Product) and 1 in every 10 jobs around the world. They have also projected that travel to emerging destinations, such as to Africa, will outpace travel to established one between now and 2030.
Airbnb is uniquely positioned to help aid in this shift. According to the company, the Airbnb platform is helping to establish pathways to ensure that this growth is inclusive by allowing communities and populations which have traditionally been unable to benefit from tourism by opening these communities up to guests in an affordable manner.
In the report, Airbnb said that: "The Airbnb platform in Africa is empowering a far more diverse range of people and places, well beyond typical hotel districts and the traditional hospitality industry, to welcome guests, create new opportunities and establish pathways to economic stability for families."
The report highlighted Airbnb's growth on the continent while also showcasing the opportunity that Africans have to leverage this platform to create an economic stability.
